LINUX TOPIC FOR THE MONTH:

“Safe computing with Linux”

Talking Points

    • Using Linux is safer than using another OS.

    • Using Linux is minimally safer than using OSX, but is much, much safer than using Windows.

    • You still need to be careful:

  • Your email hasn’t won a million dollars in the Spanish lottery! You have not received an unsolicited payment on PayPal! Your Microsoft Network services aren’t about to be deactivated! There is no exiled princess in the Philippines needing your help to smuggle out a metallic box of treasure! Don’t fall for social engineering, phishing or other scams. (Computing is the delivery mechanism, otherwise it’s not a technology issue.)

  • Don’t click on links or open attachments in emails from strangers.

  • Don’t run commands on a forum, blog, or web page blindly – even if you are desperately in need of something to fix your broken audio or video or wireless connection or whatever!

  • Apply updates as soon as you get them. Update your OS, apps, plug-ins… everything.

  • Use a router. Even if you don’t need one.

  • Install a firewall, if there isn’t one already installed. If there is, learn how to use it and make sure it’s turned “on”.

  • Don’t leave “remote control” software set for auto-connect and running 24/7. TeamViewer, VNC, SSH, etc.

  • Keep your Granny safe: Buy her a Telikin.

  • Never run Windows natively. Install Linux and, if you need it, run Windows in a virtual machine.
