Uninterruptible Power Supplies Keep Getting Better

Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) are an often overlooked piece of the larger puzzle that is the home. Although it may not be as glamorous as a large television, a solid UPS is an investment that pays off. At the Computer America offices, we use a number of them for a host of devices that we need. Including every computer, media center, and even our router/modem/networking gear. You have to protect any gear that you make an investment in, and when it comes to electronics, a surge protector just isn’t enough anymore. Therefore, we thought it would be best to review the EC850LCD UPS from CyberPower.

Positive:

The EC850LCD is a big honking device, which is exactly what you want. As a result, the hefty battery keeps your devices running long enough to properly shut them down, giving you those few extra minutes for a proper shutdown. But what is special with this device, is the Eco Mode, which allows the device to save power during non critical times. While still acting as a surge protector, it will reduce energy costs over the life of the unit, helping with savings. These are labeled with “Eco Controlled”, and help to reduce your power bill.

All these features aside, the easy to ready LCD screen and all the well spaced plugs for wall-warts and anything else, makes it versatile for many different solutions. Also with a warranty of $100,000 CyberPower has your back in the worst of events.

Negative:

A bit pricey, topping the end of the chart, but otherwise no grievance I wouldn’t have with any other battery in my life. A longer life and smarter controls (read: connected) are something the company is working on to produce. Until then, the EC850LCD is worth checking out.

Conclusion:

Now Computer America has been following the CyberPower line of products for years. They continue to offer a solid product, with models for multiple price-points. The top end never ceases to improve on the previous generation, and the the EC850LCD is no exception. If you have any home office, workstation, media center, or appliances you need kept safe, CyberPower will always be high on the list of recommendations.
