Today’s Wine

Today wine didn’t have to travel far. It’s a Canadian wine called “Naked Grape”. This particular varietal is a Shiraz. It’s a nice ruby red, medium bodied, with a nice finish. While it has a little of that Shiraz pepperiness, it’s more fruity than spicy. Very mellow.

News. Rumors. Conspiracy Theories

Some of these aren’t specifically Linux oriented, but they do affect the ‘open’ world.

Microsoft buys GitHub. The fallout, or lack of it.

For those of you who want a fun little take on this, check out my video called on YouTube.

I also wrote an article that covered the fallout from this, ten days later.

I’m all about open, so this is certainly of interest. The EU wants to ban, or charge you for, linking to news stories.

Ben, have you watched “Ready Player One” yet.

Topic(s) of the Day!

Can open and closed source ever be friends? In the wake of the GitHub purchase, that question has most definitely resurfaced.

Also . . .

What alternatives are there to Slack, the monster of business collaborative chat? I offer two things for your consideration. One is good old fashioned IRC and we can talk about setting up a server quick and easy. The program for that is ngircd and it’s as easy to find as the repository included with your favorite distribution. Or you can visit the Website.

https://ngircd.barton.de/

The second is a practically perfect drop in replacement for Slack. It’s called Rocket.Chat and you can find out about that one here.

The Website for Rocket.Chat is https://rocket.chat

Distribution Focus

Today’s distribution (or distro, if you prefer)  is called Gecko Linux and it’s based on OpenSUSE, a big and popular commercial distribution. Gecko has several ‘spins’ in both static (based on Leap) and rolling releases (based on Tumbleweed) for those people who love the bleeding edge. Another cool thing is that there is a variety of default desktop installations for it.

There’s a YouTube video for that, and you can check it out here.

Other Stuff

I’ve started doing a regular Tuesday Cooking with Linux without a net for my old friends at the Linux Journal, every Tuesday at 12 Noon eastern time.

Until next time . . . votre santéBon appétit!
