Today’s Wine

I discovered today’s wine while I was away on holidays in Honey Harbour, in the Muskokas last week. There was an LCBO off the resort and one of the staff suggested it, saying it was one of her favorite wines. Well, it’s officially one of mine, too. This red wine is a deep, multi-layered blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot, and Mourvèdre, that is seriously smooth. It’s off dry, but none the less pleasing to a dry wine guy like me. Blackberry, cherry, and blueberry flavours and a hint of chocolate; it would probably be awesome with chocolate. Check out the “Adam and Eve” label. Without some decent wine, it wouldn’t be much of a garden, now would it?

News. Rumors. Conspiracy Theories

Some of these aren’t specifically Linux oriented, but they do affect the ‘open’ world.

Topic(s) of the Day!

Marcel just got an Oculus GO

Programming languages. One of the biggest attractions for using Linux in education might be programming due to the huge number of supported and available programming languages. Some of the biggest include c++, Python, PHP, Java, and just plain old bash and perl. There are also much older languages that you can still get your hands on. For instance, remember this?

IDENTIFICATION DIVISION.
      PROGRAM-ID. HELLO-WORLD.
* Just saying hello to the world.
PROCEDURE DIVISION.
DISPLAY ‘Hello, you crazy old world!’.
STOP RUN.

That would be COBOL, baby!

Also . . .

Let’s talk about backups, shall we? And let’s talk about a tool called LuckyBackup.

You can download this one directly from your repositories, but you can also get it at the following address. http://luckybackup.sourceforge.net/

Distribution Focus

Today’s distribution is twofold in that I have two distributions to show you. The first is a serious option for those who take their open source seriously. It’s called GNewSense and it’s a Debian based distribution that uses only completely free and open software. There are no binary blobs, proprietary drivers, or closed codecs.

You can get GNewSense at https://gnewsense.org

Then there’s PonyOS which is a completely free and open source operating system that the developer(s) assure us isn’t Linux. Which is cool. Because PonyOS might have taken the prize for one of the weirdest Linux distributions of all time.

There’s a YouTube video that covers gNewSense, PonyOS, and even LuckyBackup. You can check it out here.

Other Stuff

Believe it or not, I finally did my first podcast interview since I threatened to start doing that more than a year ago. I used a service called Zencastr which I am relatively impressed with. Post production editing was done with a Linux based tool called Audacity.

I continue to do my regular Tuesday “Cooking with Linux (without a net)” every Tuesday at 12 Noon eastern time.

Until next time . . . votre santéBon appétit!
